Making the Film - The Screening Room

Screening Roon: Tiffen Filter Tests

About this page

In late April I visited Optex International where I bought an acessory for my Canon MV30 miniDV camcorder. While there, I was given the opportunity to test out all most of the well known filters that are used by DV filmmakers to make their video go some way to looking like film. These filters normally soften the hard look of video and give it a much more elegant and cinematic feel. In this page you will see the results of 8 popular filters so you can make your own mind up about how good they are. Unfortunately, I filmed the tests in interlaced mode by accident, instead of progressive scan; this is a problem because I kept the camera in motion while the filters were on, and some screen grabs have come out a bit 'ripply' because of the interlaced nature of the shots. Despite this moment of stupidity, however, you should still be able to see how well the filters performed. One final point to note is that I was filming through the Optex window onto their car park, so the sweeping colors throughout the picture that you see are actually reflections from within the office.
